This is a frugal trick I’ve been using for years: The Perfect Change.
This combination of coins ensures that you can meet any number after the comma and, thus, get back round dollars in change.
Bring with you 104 cents:
No matter the fraction, you can pay exact this way.
In another version this loose change trick calls for 99 cents (3 quarters, 1 dime, 2 nickles, 4 pennies) but I found myself going through dimes too fast: bring 2 x 10 is easier.
Obviously this is Perfect Change on a per transaction basis. I usually carry 2 sets with me “in case”. Most of the time I plan my purchase moments and know how many sets to bring with me though.
