This Was Your Weekend on the Frugal Web
Starting off the new week with a quick round-up of what’s been done over the weekend.
- Yahoo posted another series of tips on saving money on gas. A good one:
Ditch the drive-thru: One test in Toronto found that you can get a fast-food breakfast faster and burn less gas in your car if you park and go into the restaurant. Considering how much idling cars do in drive-thru lanes, this isn’t surprising.

- Buying generic brands (doesn’t that sound a whole lot better than the B-brand of yesteryear?) makes absolute common financial sense and the quality is often just as good, especially as many of these brands come from the same place the A-brand came from. The Simple Dollar goes into why switch to generic if you already have a brand you like.
- In a “on the hand… on the other hand…” type of post The Frugal Duchess recaps some last minute Back to School shopping tips from FamilyCorner.
- In the post of the weekend Free Money Finance gives a Biblical answer to what to do and how to react to panhandlers:

- Blunt Money went Christmas shopping this weekend. My wife and I have started doing the same but we also set aside some Christmas money every month. Gifts bought and decorations ready (last year’s sale), it still is nice to have some extra money around that time to go out while it is Christmas time.
- Money management for college students has good tips.
Carry cash for everyday purchases - It’s a lot harder to overdraw your checking account when you carry cash. As long as you have money in your wallet or purse, you still have money. When there is no more money in your wallet, then you are broke.
